Creepy drone footage captures abandoned settlement in Greece

Updated

This stunning drone footage comes from a flight over a place that while it may look beautiful, has a dark history.

In the late 1990's SOE company presented the ambitious plan for the creation of of Dionysos near Sitia, Crete.

The settlement began to be built, but soon there were quarrels as, among other things, Analouka Beach, the stretch of sand next to the settlement, was found to collect much of the rubbish of the Aegean Sea.

Vast quantities of rubbish - mainly plastic - are drawn by the wind and strong sea currents and end up in this location. The planners' hopes for 'idyllic summers on the sand' were reduced to rubble.

The current owners are trying to reform the settlement, but it is a difficult project.

There have been cleaning efforts on the beach, the last being organised by the WWF at the end of 2017, but the beach is now dirtier than ever.

However, the town still looks picturesque from above!
