Why African elephants have cracks in their skin

Scientists at the University of Geneva have confirmed that African elephants' skin isn't just wrinkly, it contains actual cracks.

While that sounds problematic, the team found that a network of fine fissures in the skin's uppermost layer actually helps the giant animal survive in very hot environments.

The tiny crevices hold onto water, which helps to keep the animals cool and also prevents dehydration.
