Buyers of Apple’s pricey new iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max handsets are complaining that they’re waking up to dead handsets – after the devices fail to charge.

Forum users, bloggers and social media users claim that the devices don’t charge when the screen is switched off – meaning they can’t be left to charge overnight.

It’s not clear how widespread the issue is, and Apple has not yet issued an official comment on what’s been described as ‘ChargeGate’.

The issue was uncovered by video blogger Lewis Hilsenteger, who said it causes problems across multiple models of the newly launched XS iPhones.

Hilsenteger said the problem happens when devices are plugged into a wall socket (not with wireless charging).

He said, ‘Apple hasn’t responded publicly but I’ve received many screenshots from users that seem to indicate they’re aware of the charge issue.’

In messages sent to users, Apple suggests that users ensure the screen is awake when plugged in, by tapping to wake it after plugging the device in to charge.

Teething problems are fairly common with new phone launches, and often addressed via a software update.
