The Met Office has urged caution amid predictions Britain is set for a brutally cold winter.

Some reports have warned Britons to forget the long, hot days of summer and said the country could face a deep freeze this winter, lasting several months.

Some have even predicted months’ worth of snow.

But forecasters at the Met Office have said such predictions should be treated with caution at present.

‘We aren’t forecasting months of snow,’ the Met Office told Yahoo News UK. ‘Our forecasts don’t provide that much detail. It’s important people realise that we don’t write these headlines’.

The spokesperson admitted there is a risk headlines such as ‘months’ of brutal snow’ could erode trust in forecasters such as the Met Office.

In fact, according to quotes from the Met Office’s Helen Roberts, there is a significantly higher probability the weather from September to November will fall into the warmest of its five categories.

‘We can expect below-average precipitation in the period up to December, predicted by the UK’s official forecasters as falling into the driest of our five categories, with 20 per cent likelihood – and slightly less likely to be wetter than average,’ she told the Mirror.
