Boris Johnson booed as he watches cricket at Oval

Boris Johnson was booed by cricket fans when he was shown on the big screen at the England v India test.

The former foreign secretary, who this week announced the break-up of his marriage, was taking time out from his troubles at the Oval.

But when TV cameras spotted him, he was jeered by spectators at the south London cricket ground.

Former England captain David Gower referred to Mr Johnson's marital problems as he commentated on the scene.

The Sky pundit said: "The former foreign secretary, he appears to be on his own, which reflects what we have seen in the papers in the last couple of days."

Mr Johnson was studying his phone as a chorus of boos rang out and looked up from the mobile's screen as he heard the jeers.

Journalist Lawrence Booth, editor of cricket bible Wisden, tweeted: "Boos ring out around the ground as the big screen zooms in on Boris Johnson."

The incident drew comparisons with then chancellor George Osborne's appearance at a 2012 London Paralympics medal ceremony, when he was loudly booed by sports fans.

On Friday, Mr Johnson and his wife Marina Wheeler, both 54, announced they have separated and are going through the process of divorce.

News of the divorce comes as Mr Johnson is at the centre of intense speculation over a possible challenge to Theresa May as leader of the Conservative Party and Prime Minister.
