Protesters rally at new US Embassy over Trump's 'shambolic' immigration policies

Dozens of Americans have gathered outside the US Embassy in London to protest against President Donald Trump's "shambolic" immigration policies.

A group of more than 50 demonstrators, including children, gathered in the Saturday afternoon sunshine with banners and placards outside the new embassy building in Nine Elms, south London.

The protest is part of a worldwide action day in which Americans across Europe and the United States demonstrate opposition to Mr Trump's immigration policies.

Under his "zero-tolerance" policy, the American government has started prosecuting those caught entering the country without authorisation.

While public pressure led to Mr Trump halting his policy of taking children away from their detained parents, around 2,000 are still being held, with some families saying they have not known how to locate them.

Meredith Wheeler, chairwoman of Democrats Abroad in south-western France, said she was on holiday in the UK this week when she decided to join the protest outside the US embassy.

The 66-year-old American said: "We're an ad-hoc group of Americans who are completely opposed, as most Americans are, to these inhumane, cruel immigration policies by Donald Trump.

"It's complete chaos. Even though they are now supposed to reunite these children with their parents, they don't know where they are because they didn't keep proper records. It's completely shambolic."

Demonstrations were being held over the world, including in a number of French cities, she added.

Mrs Wheeler, who lives in Lautrec, near Toulouse in France, added: "Americans abroad, we are in a sense all immigrants of the countries that we are in. We understand that this is a ridiculous, inhumane policy and we want to get together and make a big noise."

Demonstrators were also encouraging Americans living abroad to register for absentee ballots so they can vote in the November midterm elections and to donate to help families requiring legal aid.

Children taking part held a string of a paper figures united by their hands, while a placard signed by Dakata, aged five, read: "We care, we care, we care".

Chants of "Say it loud, say it clear: immigrants are welcome here" also rang out in the sunshine.

Another placard simply read: "Where is my mummy and daddy?".
