Police release footage of fatal Nottingham stabbing

Detectives investigating the murder of a 21-year-old man nearly two years ago have issued CCTV footage of the moment the victim was stabbed.

Officers from Nottinghamshire Police hope the distressing footage will prompt witnesses to come forward to identify the man who killed Aqib Mazhar in June 2016.

The release of the footage, showing armed men attacking the victim's car in Forest Fields, Nottingham, comes a week after Crimestoppers offered a £10,000 reward for information leading to a conviction for murder.

Mr Mazhar and a friend were travelling along Russell Road at around 8.30pm when a group of men travelling in three vehicles saw him and surrounded his car.

Although the attacker who delivered the fatal blow has never been held to account, five other men from Nottingham and Derby have previously been jailed for a combined total of more than 44 years for manslaughter following the death.

Mr Mazhar's mother, Shameem Akhtar, still lives in the area and issued an emotional appeal to anyone with information earlier this month.

Detective Chief Inspector Rob Severn, who is running the investigation, said: "We have pursued all avenues available to us in order to catch this heartless killer.

"We are asking everyone to watch this video and please contact us if they think they have any information that could lead to identifying him.

"We know that he is probably a young, local man, and is probably part of the group who were jailed. You can contact Crimestoppers completely anonymously and you could be eligible for this cash reward."

Chief Inspector Donna Lawton added: "This horrific incident highlights the devastating impact that knife crime can have on families and their communities and we really hope that someone comes forward as a result of this appeal."

Anyone with information about the murder is urged to call police on 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
