Man in court accused of sexually assaulting police officer during arrest

A man accused of sexually assaulting a police officer as she tried to arrest him has appeared in court, police said.

Luca Jelic, 29, is alleged to have attacked two officers in Sheffield city centre in the early hours of Friday morning.

South Yorkshire Police said they had responded to a report of an attempted rape on Scotland Street, where the defendant lives.

Jelic is said to have struck both officers with a wooden "for sale" sign, before sexually assaulting one of them as she tried to arrest him.

He appeared at Sheffield Magistrates' Court on Saturday charged with attempting to rape a woman, assaulting two police officers and sexually assaulting one of the officers.

Jelic, who also faces charges of possession of a class A drug and criminal damage, was remanded in custody until his next court appearance on May 28.
