Long delays after serious crash closes M62

A serious crash involving a car and a lorry carrying a caravan has blocked the M62 in both directions.

Humberside Police said it happened at around 9.30am on Tuesday near the Ouse Bridge at Goole, when a lorry went through the central reservation and hit the car which was heading east.

Humberside Police would not confirm any injuries, but drivers were warned to expect long delays as investigations were carried out.

The air ambulance was at the scene, as well as fire, ambulance and police.

Driver Steve White, 60, from Leeds, was heading to work at the Press Association in Howden when he saw vehicles braking in front.

He stopped around 200 yards short of the scene of the crash and said the caravan had come off the back of the lorry and was stopped from careering off the side of the bridge by a barrier.

Mr White said: "It happened about 300 yards from the apex of the bridge, heading east.

"It must have only just happened when I saw the cars' brake lights in front."

Humberside Police said: " A lorry which was travelling westbound had gone through the central reservation and collided with an oncoming car which was travelling eastbound.

"Both carriageways are closed while emergency crews are on the scene.

"They are expected to be closed for a significant amount of time throughout today. Motorists are advised to avoid the area. Diversions are in place.

"We understand that drivers have already been caught up in traffic jams leading up to the collision.

"We would ask them to be patient and remain in their vehicles for safety reasons and to allow emergency services to carry out their work."
