Taoiseach says Donald Trump open to solution for undocumented Irish

Donald Trump has pledged to find a solution for the thousands of undocumented Irish living in the US.

The president discussed the issue with Irish premier Leo Varadkar during a meeting in the White House on Thursday.

There are between 10,000 and 50,000 Irish people living in the US without documentation.

Many of those without legal permission overstayed a visitors' visa and currently work and have families in the country.

Following the meeting the Taoiseach said Mr Trump told him it was an issue very much on his mind.

He said the president was supportive of working to find a solution.

"We have a measure of support and degree of enthusiasm from the administration to work on a solution for thousands of Irish people who are here undocumented but who are hard-working, tax-paying people
who are very loyal to America," Mr Varadkar said.

Mr Trump has in the past vowed to clamp down on illegal immigration in the US.

Last year the then taoiseach Enda Kenny made a speech in front of Mr Trump on the value of immigrants.
