The cold snap in numbers

Here are some of the key statistics from the week's wintry weather in a fast-developing situation where new highs and lows are being set around the clock:

Minus 11.7C: the lowest minimum temperature of the week, recorded at South Farnborough in Hampshire on the night of February 27/28. This was also the lowest minimum temperature recorded anywhere in the whole of February.

50cm: the depth of snow reached by March 2 in Drumalbin, Lanarkshire and St Athan in the Vale of Glamorgan. Around 40cm of snow was measured in Bishopton, Renfrewshire and in Spadeadam in Cumbria. Further south, 26cm of snow piled up in Wittering, Cambridgeshire and 16cm at Yeovilton, Somerset.

Minus 5.2C: the lowest maximum temperature on Thursday March 1, measured in Bryn Bach Park in Tredegar. This was a new record for the lowest daily maximum temperature anywhere in the UK for the month of March. The previous record was minus 4.6C, set on March 2 2001 in Cassley, Sutherland.

61mph: wind gusts on March 1 recorded on the north-east coast of England and in Northern Ireland, when the Beast From The East and Storm Emma were both pounding the country. Peak gusts of 58mph were recorded on the Welsh coast and 56mph in south-west England.

Minus 13C: how cold it felt in the wind in parts of the Midlands and Wales on Thursday March 1.

1.7C: the maximum temperature recorded anywhere in the UK on February 28, in Katesbridge, Northern Ireland. It was the lowest daily maximum temperature for the whole of February.
