Murder probe after man dies following unprovoked attack in bar

A murder investigation has been launched after a 29-year-old man died following an unprovoked attack in a bar, police said.

Emergency services were called at around 1am on Saturday to reports that a man had been assaulted during an altercation in the Maya bar on Wood Street in Liverpool.

The victim, who was taken to hospital where he was pronounced dead, has since been formally identified as Anthony Condron from Huyton, Merseyside Police said.

Detective Chief Inspector Mark Tivendale said the victim had been on a night out with his girlfriend and friends.

Officers said they would like to speak to three men who were in the bar at the time of the incident, who then left at around 1am and headed in the direction of Fleet Street.

One of the men is described as white, 6ft 2in with brown hair, a muscular build and stubble, wearing a puffer jacket; and another as white, around 20 years old with a slim build and wearing a grey hooded jacket.

Mr Tivendale said: "The incident happened in a busy bar in the centre of Liverpool and would have been witnessed by many people.

"Our investigation is in its very early stages but we believe an altercation has taken place inside the bar between the victim and a number of unknown males.

"I would appeal to anyone who may have witnessed the assault, or the events leading up to it, to get in touch with us.

"I'd also like to appeal for anyone who may have mobile phone footage or photographs from within the Maya bar to come forward.

"You may have heard words being exchanged or witnessed the offenders leaving the bar.

"Any information could prove vital to our investigation and to identifying who was responsible and bringing them to justice.

"This was an unprovoked attack on a young male enjoying a night out with his girlfriend and friends, which has tragically resulted in the loss of his life."

The force said a cordon remains in place while forensic enquiries and searches are conducted.

Mr Condron's family have been informed and are being supported by specialist officers.

A post mortem examination is due to take place.
