Liverpool Lime Street Station shut for two days due to emergency repairs

One of the country's main train stations has closed for two days for emergency repairs.

Work at Liverpool Lime Street is expected to take 24 hours and has forced the busy terminus to close on Sunday and Monday.

Passengers and commuters have been told to check with train operators before travelling.

Network Rail said severe corrosion was found on a structure that carries overhead wires over all four lines, stopping trains from passing underneath.

A spokesman said: "All lines to and from Liverpool Lime Street are closed while we carry out emergency repairs.

"We will work as quickly as possible to reopen all lines.

"I'd like to apologise for the disruption this will cause and ask passengers to check before they travel."
