Woman suing Sephora claims she contracted herpes from lipstick

A woman is suing Sephora after she says she tried a tester tube of lipstick and ended up with herpes.

According to TMZ, the California woman says she visited a Hollywood Sephora in October 2015.

She sampled a lipstick from one of the 'common use' tubes on display and was later diagnosed with the virus by medical pros.

She says she never had cold sores or herpes before. Can you actually get herpes from lipstick?

Dr. Amesh Adalja, an infectious-disease specialist and a senior associate at the Johns Hopkins Center for Health Security in Baltimore, told Live Science that technically, a person could get the virus from lipstick.

However, that's not a common way to get the infection.

According to the World Health Organization, an estimated 67% of people under 50 have the HSV-1, or Herpes Virus Type 1.

Adalja says that many people who think they get the virus from certain things may have already been positive because it's such a common and unavoidable infection.

The documents claim Sephora failed to adequately warn customers about the risks of getting herpes or other diseases by trying lipstick samples.

Sephora said: "We take product hygiene very seriously and we are dedicated to following best practices in our stores."
