What the papers say - October 8

The predicament facing Theresa May after a turbulent week marred by a disastrous conference speech and a foiled coup dominates Sunday's front pages.

The PM has come out fighting in an interview with The Sunday Times, saying she wants the "best people" in her Cabinet - a signal that Boris Johnson may be moved from the Foreign Office to reassert her authority, the paper says.

Meanwhile a statesman of old rides to Mrs May's rescue in the Mail on Sunday, in which former Conservative prime minister Sir John Major scorns Tory rebels for risking a Jeremy Corbyn government.

The Observer says several senior Tory figures have told the newspaper the PM needs to implement radical changes to her party in order to survive, including promoting young MPs into top jobs.

The Sunday Express says the "Three Brexiteers" - Mr Johnson, Brexit Secretary David Davis and International Trade Secretary Liam Fox - have thrown their weight behind the PM and urged their Conservative colleagues to follow suit.

However The Sunday Telegraph says Tories are "at war" over the PM's plan to draw up a multi-billion pound contingency fund in case the UK leaves the EU without a deal. The newspaper says rebels have given Mrs May until Christmas to make ground on Brexit or face another attempt to oust her.

Away from the PM's woes, the Sunday Mirror carries images reportedly from within a UK prison showing inmates with contraband including alcohol, drugs and banned food items such as steaks and gym supplements.
