Make sure you do your research in advance, flying further will mean flights are going to be more expensive.

This also means you should try and book as far in advance as possible to make sure you get the best deal.

There have been many rumours circling over the years that Tuesday is the best day to book flights to get the most for your money.

This is a myth! It shouldn't make any difference which day of the week you book - you're unlikely to see much, if any, difference in price.

Make use of comparison sites too - Yapta is a great site which sends instant savings alerts when prices drop on airline tickets and hotel rooms.

While the 'buy on Tuesday' rule is a myth, the 'travel on Tuesday' rule is spot on.

That's because air fares on Tuesdays and Wednesdays tend to be a lot cheaper than they are on other days due to a lower volume of travellers.

Unsurprisingly the worst day to book a flight is the day before you travel.

It's likely to be about £200 more expensive to book last minute than to book in advance.

While last minute deals may look enticing, it's fairly likely you're still going to end up paying more, even if it is around two weeks before the trip.
