Six people taken to hospital after four-vehicle pile-up

Updated:

Six people have been taken to hospital following a four-vehicle pile-up on a busy A-road.

Emergency teams were called to the crash on the London-bound carriageway of the A299 on Thanet Way, near Herne Bay, Kent, at around 2pm on Saturday.

Air ambulances were scrambled to airlift two female casualties and four other people were transferred in land ambulances, Kent Fire and Rescue Service said. The condition of the casualties was unknown.

Heavy rescue cutting equipment had to be used to free some of those trapped. And Kent Police said road closures were brought in as they advised drivers to find alternative routes.

A police spokesman said: "Kent Police was called at 2pm following a collision on the London carriageway of the A299, close to the turn off for St Nicholas At Wade. The incident involved four vehicles."
