People #PrayForBerlin on social media as police say a truck was driven into the Christmas market crowds on purpose

Updated:

The driver who rammed a truck into a busy Christmas market in Berlin did so intentionally, police have said.

Almost 50 people were injured, and at least 12 have been killed, in the incident Berlin Police said was a suspected terrorist attack.

The number of dead has risen overnight, as authorities had previously said that nine were killed when the vehicle smashed into the popular market at the Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church, which was full of people enjoying a pre-Christmas night out.

People all across the world have taken to Twitter to share their thoughts about the victims and also to reflect on how many times we've been here before this year.

But the main thought people are having is that we shouldn't let this divide us and that terrorism has no religion.
