A woman's newborn child has died after a tree fell on to a car in Merseyside.

Firefighters had to cut free the pregnant woman from the damaged vehicle following the incident in Arrowe Park Road, Wirral, at about 8am on Thursday.

The woman was then taken to hospital by ambulance for her injuries and later gave birth to a baby girl, who died.

A spokeswoman for Merseyside Police said: "The family of a woman injured during a road traffic collision on Arrowe Park Road, Wirral, yesterday have confirmed that she gave birth following the incident.

"Sadly, the baby, a girl, passed away in the early hours of this morning.

"The family have been asked to be left alone in privacy to be allowed to grieve.

"The woman has received medical treatment and is expected to make a full recovery.

"The family would like to thank the emergency services and everyone, including members of the public, who came to her aid on the day.

"An investigation into the incident is ongoing."
