Strictly and Planet Earth see BBC claim double ratings victory

The BBC can claim a double victory in the Sunday ratings war as Strictly Come Dancing and Planet Earth II were the most watched shows of the evening.

BBC One dancing show Strictly had its highest peak viewing figure of the series so far as 11 million watched Irish TV presenter Laura Whitmore leave the show. The average viewing figure was 10.1 million with a 42.5% audience share.

The premiere of Sir David Attenborough's natural history series Planet Earth II was watched by an average audience of 9.2 million.

However, ITV can claim its own Sunday night success story as The X Factor pulled in 6.45 million viewers with a 25.3% audience share. This is a 200,000 increase from last week's results show in the same slot.

Girl Group Four Of Diamonds failed to sparkle enough for the public as they became the latest act to be eliminated.

The singing show was in tune with the 16-34 age group and was the most watched programme for this demographic with 1.4 million, or 35% of that age bracket, watching the show over the weekend.

Viewers had to bid farewell to another popular weekend personality with the finale of BBC One's Poldark.

The fan favourite was given a sterling send off as it enjoyed its highest viewing figure of the series, with 5.8 million tuning in to get their last glimpse of Ross Poldark, played by Aidan Turner.

The third series of the Cornish drama, based on the novels of Winston Graham, is set to air in 2017.
