Vietnamese students hospitalised after using plastic bag as a condom


Two Vietnamese students have been left with serious injuries after they tried to have sex using a plastic bag - because they were "too shy" to buy a condom.

Vietnamese newspaper Tuoi Tre reported it was the first time the two undergraduates had had sex and the boy suggested the the girl they use a plastic bag, as they were too embarrassed to buy a condom.

The sexual encounter resulted in the pair receiving treatment in Hanoi Kidney Hospital for genital lesions, abrasions and bleeding. They were prescribed antibiotics for infections caused by their injuries and advised that plastic bags are not functional as sexual protection.

A recent study of 2,700 students by Hanoi Medical University and Hanoi Medical College found only 16% claimed to have engaged in sexual intercourse. The study found only a third of those had used a condom the first time they had sex and a quarter found buying condoms embarrassing.
