But for Amy Sanderson and her three friends it was the real deal - after they had to be rescued from a boat by strapping lifeboatmen.
Amy and friends Laura White, Ann Peters and Natalie Pyne were celebrating her upcoming wedding on a hire vessel on the River Dart, near Dartmouth in Devon, on Saturday when it became stuck fast in mud as the tide went out.
Luckily, the local RNLI crew were on hand to rescue them. A spokesman for the RNLI said the women were cold but otherwise unhurt, and were taken to the lifeboat station for a hot drink.
He added: "The irony is the bride to be had requested a 'no fuss and low key' day.
"The hens who had arranged the day thought an afternoon afloat on the beautiful River Dart would set the mood for dinner in Dartmouth in the evening. Best laid plans and all of that.
"I don't think they will ever forget the hen party. Amy, all at Dart RNLI wish you a wonderful wedding day and don't forget to send us a snap."
