Police arrest man, 42, after five-hour stand-off with armed officers

A man was being questioned after being arrested on suspicion of possessing a firearm following a five-hour stand-off with armed police at an office building.

Police were called to the property in Whitfield, near Dover, at 4.05pm on Tuesday over fears for the welfare of a man believed to be carrying a weapon.

The building in Gordon Road was evacuated before officers arrived, leaving the man alone inside.

Surrounding roads were sealed off leading to congestion in the area while police negotiators were called to the scene.

Kent Police said a 42-year-old man from Dover was arrested at around 9.25pm on suspicion of possession of a firearm

The man, who has not been named, was taken into custody and road closures were lifted.

Officers had earlier advised people to avoid the area while they dealt with the incident.
