Theresa May was given a full ceremonial welcome as she arrived in Berlin for her first meeting as Prime Minister with Angela Merkel.

German troops greeted the new premier with a guard of honour as she met her counterpart at the Chancellery.

Mrs May will tell the Chancellor that Britain wants to maintain close relations with Berlin even after quitting the European Union.

But she will make clear that she is in no rush to start the two-year process of pulling the UK out of the bloc under Article 50.

The premiers will talk again over a working dinner during the visit, which is the first since Mrs May took the keys to No 10 last week.

Mrs May and Mrs Merkel looked on as the 10-minute ceremony began with a rendition of God Save The Queen.

After inspecting the military, the premiers walked down the red carpet into the Chancellery, where Mrs May was heard to say that the welcome had been "splendid".
