Schoolie McSchoolface and Donald J Trump lose out in school name contest

Common sense seems to have prevailed in the debate about a new name for a primary school in the US.

The popular suggestions of Schoolie McSchoolface and Donald J Trump Elementary have been vetoed as the new name for the Robert E Lee school in Austin, Texas.

Instead eight more grounded suggestions have been put forward by the school.

Now the school's Campus Advisory Council will make a short list of three from the approved suggestions.

Schoolie got a look-in after British voters suggested Boaty McBoatface for the name of a research ship, sparking a Namey McNameFace meme. It's popped up as potential names for a beach, a council, a horse, a train, a plane and more.

Trump did not make the final cut despite being the most popular initial suggestion. His name was suggested 45 times out of 240 submissions.

The eight remaining choices include celebrated American novelist Harper Lee, opera singer Barbara Smith Conrad and sculptor Elisabet Ney.

Other choices have links to the area or the school.
