When a celebrity dies you know that there will be thousands, possibly millions, of people grieving with you.
The death of pop superstar Prince is being felt by fans all around the world and none more so than Matthew Patterson - an English teacher who was in a room full of students when he heard the news, and had to compare it to the likes of Kanye West or Beyonce dying to elicit some understanding. That must have felt pretty lonely.
Patterson put on one of Prince's most famous songs for the students and one of them recorded his reaction, which has since gone massively viral.
"It hit me like a ton of bricks," Patterson told the New York Daily News.
But given that he was in a classroom, he had to somehow make the students understand what kind of artist Prince was.
"I talked about what Prince meant to me as an artist and a brave performer and a person unwilling to take stuff from record companies," he said.
"I've been listening to Prince since I was 7 ... I must've spent thousands and thousands of hours listening to Prince. I was just a huge fan."
In a year in which a number of musical pioneers have died, we can all understand the feeling.
