Man charged with police officer murder bid after axe attack

A 35-year-old man has been charged with the attempted murder of a female police officer who was seriously injured in an axe attack.

Nathan Sumner, of Plowright Close, Gleadless, Sheffield, has also been charged with a number of other offences in connection with the incident on Wednesday night.

The officer, who has not been named, lost a finger when she was attacked with a hatchet after attending a domestic incident in Plowright Close. She also suffered a fractured skull and a broken leg.

Sumner will appear at Sheffield Magistrates' Court on Friday.
