Ricky Gervais's popular TV character David Brent is back and he is launching a music career.

The first trailer for the big-screen spin-off of popular BBC Two show The Office has been released and shows Brent explaining his new career move.

Titled Life On The Road, the film is set 15 years on from The Office.

Brent is working as a sales rep for a company called Lavichem, trying to launch his music career on the side.

The trailer starts with Brent walking into the office announcing "He's back", followed by his signature evil chuckle and the statement: "Did you miss me?"

A suit-clad Brent is then filmed talking down the camera, explaining his new career choice.

"Hello, I'm David Brent," he says, "You probably know me as the star of the BBC Two documentary The Office ... that was back in 2000 and ... No, that was then, this is now, I'm currently a singer-songwriter and a rep."

The original "mockumentary" BBC show was written, directed and created by Gervais and Stephen Merchant.

Gervais thanked fans on Twitter following the trailer release, writing: "Wow! What an overwhelmingly brilliant response to the little #LifeonTheRoad teaser. Thanks so much. I f*****g love you."

:: David Brent: Life On The Road will be released in UK cinemas on August 19.
