Man rearrested over religious leader Jalal Uddin's death

Detectives investigating the killing of a religious leader on his way home from a mosque have rearrested a man on suspicion of murder.

Jalal Uddin was found with head injuries in a children's play area in Rochdale after being attacked on February 18.

The 64-year-old was taken to hospital but died a short time later.

A 21-year-old man and a boy of 17 were arrested on February 22 on suspicion of murder and were later bailed until April 20.

But officers have since uncovered new evidence and have rearrested the 21-year-old on suspicion of murder, Greater Manchester Police said.

Detective Chief Inspector Terry Crompton said: "This investigation remains a high priority for us and as such, significant work is being carried out to ensure we bring those responsible to justice.

"As a result of this excellent work by our officers and detectives, as well as help from the community, new evidence has come to light which has allowed us to once again arrest this 21-year-old man on suspicion of Jalal's murder."
