A 29-year-old man has appeared in court charged with preparation of terrorist acts in connection with the Syrian conflict.

Mohammad Uddin, of Ilford, East London, was charged with engaging in conduct in preparation of terrorist acts.

He appeared at Westminster Magistrates' Court and was remanded in custody to appear at the Old Bailey on August 28.

A spokesman for the South East Counter Terrorism Unit (SECTU) said that Uddin had been charged under section 5 of the Terrorism Act 2006.

He said: "We would reassure residents and the public that the charge is not linked to any immediate threat to local communities or anywhere else in the UK and is related to the ongoing conflict in Syria."
