West Ham United star Diafra Sakho has been arrested on suspicion of assault, it has been reported.

The 25-year-old from Senegal was reportedly arrested last Thursday, three days before West Ham's shock 2-0 victory over Arsenal in the Premier League.

Police held the sportsman on suspicion of attacking a girlfriend in east London, The Sun reported.

A Scotland Yard spokesman said: "Officers from Tower Hamlets have arrested a man on suspicion of common assault, criminal damage and malicious communication.

"The 25-year-old was arrested on Thursday 6 August at an address in Emerson Park, Hornchurch.

"He was taken to an east London police station and has been bailed to a date in late September."

Sakho joined West Ham in August last year and has scored 10 goals for the team in 24 appearances.

Sakho is described as "quick, strong and an outstanding athlete" on the West Ham website, which also says he has "taken to life in the Premier League like a duck to water".

The profile describes him as a "quietly confident striker".

He previously played for the French club FC Metz.
