M56 closed as fire crews tackle propane tanker blaze

Updated

Firefighters are tackling a blaze after a tanker carrying propane gas burst into flames, shutting a motorway.

The M56 in Cheshire is currently closed in both directions between junctions 12 and 15, Runcorn and Ellesmere Port.

Fire and police have set up a 1,600-metre cordon around the incident as a precaution and residents in the Helsby, Hapsford and Elton areas have been advised to stay indoors with their windows and doors closed.

The Liverpool to Runcorn train line is also closed.

The closures are expected to remain in force for several hours and motorists are advised to avoid the area, Cheshire Police said.
