The nation's motorists would choose Cheryl Cole and TV comedian and all-round genius Stephen Fry as their ideal in-car passengers, a survey has revealed.

George Clooney and Kylie Minogue come closely behind the famous pair in the list of celebrities that drivers would choose to spend time with on a long journey.

However, the survey, run by Skoda and YouGov, showed that most drivers would choose to travel alone if they had the choice - 60 percent said they would rather have no passengers at all.

A leading psychologist has admitted that this 60 percent could be on to something as driving alone could actually be the answer to a happier life.

"Driving on your own gives you time to think, whether mulling over issues or remembering good times," said psychologist Glenda McMahon. "Given the hectic 24/7 lifestyles we all now seem to lead, the car has become a sanctuary for us to escape to, away from the stresses and strains of everyday life."

Those who do drive alone cite music as the most common way to pass the time, with 40 percent saying the radio is their driving companion. A further 12 percent enjoyed the passing scenery and 10 percent of interviewees use the time to think.

At the other end of the scale, just one percent of employees consider their boss to be their ideal passenger, while driving styles, smelly cars and backseat drivers were also named as irritations.
