Subaru has revealed the full details of its much anticipated Cosworth Impreza STI CS400.
The model will be limited to a production run of just 75 cars, each with a whopping £49,995 price tag.
That sum does buy you one of the world's fastest hatchbacks though; the CS400 will crack 62mph in just 3.7 seconds and cover a quarter mile in 12.6 seconds.
To achieve those figures the Impreza has been significantly reengineered by tuning company Cosworth, and includes a range of specialist components.
Subaru's famous 2.5-litre turbocharged Boxer engine remains at the heart of the CS400, but Cosworth has installed an all-new turbocharger and exhaust system to deliver more power. The tuner has also fitted high-performance pistons and head gaskets, as well as high-strength forged connecting rods, a higher pressure oil pump and unique Cosworth bearings.
Together with the obligatory ECU re-map, Cosworth's enhancements means the CS400 develops 394bhp and 400lb ft of torque – a 33 per cent improvement on the standard STI.
Subaru's six-speed manual gearbox and clutch have also been upgraded to handle the extra power, and Cosworth collaborated with technicians from Bilstein and Eibach to find the optimum setup for the car's suspension. New coil springs mean the car is 10mm lower at the front, but Subaru insists that better components have meant the CS400's ride quality has actually improved on that of the standard STI.
It's safe to assume that the special edition stops quicker too – Cosworth commissioned brake specialists AP Racing to produce larger diameter ventilated front discs and six-pot callipers to regulate the Impreza's supercar pace.
Each CS400 will get a numbered certificate of authenticity, but the car will be easy to distinguish from the standard STI as it gets a new front bumper, fog lights, grille, rear spoiler and anthracite alloy wheels. Inside the car has been trimmed with Cosworth-branded black leather.
The new Impreza goes on sale exclusively in the UK in June.
