£1 million cannabis factory found in disused Army bunker

Police have spent an entire day dismantling a sprawling £1 million cannabis crop at a disused Army barracks in Northamptonshire.

The huge cannabis factory was removed by police after being discovered at the Royal Ordnance Depot in Weedon on Wednesday.

The illegal farm was discovered by officers inside a unit at the depot.

Northamptonshire Police said it took a day to dismantle the crop at the abandoned military base.

Officers from the Daventry Neighbourhood Policing Team spent the following day destroying the plants while cultivation equipment was also seized.

No arrests are believed to have been made and the force has urged anyone with information to call them on 101.

The former base was built between 1804 and 1816 as a place to store equipment, ammunition and weapons for use by the British Army.

The depot remained in operation throughout the Second World War and during the 1950s before it was decommissioned in 1965.

The original buildings included eight storehouses, four magazines, two lodges, a canal basin, a barracks and a military prison.

The Grade II-listed building is now privately owned and is used to rent out work spaces and units to local businesses.
