Isaac Newton wasn't just one of the greatest scientists of all time and a fan of apples. He also revolutionised our money.

He was appointed Warden of the Royal Mint in the spring of 1696, and Master of the Mint three years later. He held the role for more than 20 years, interviewing criminals, making coins better, harder to forge and experimenting on them to test their purity.

The MEN reports, "Back in 1992 and 1993 the Mint issued a commemorative coin to celebrate the British presidency of the council of Europe.

"109,000 coins were issued, compared to as many as 12 million usually, making it collectable.

"The coins are no longer in circulation because the 50p piece was reduced in size in 1997, but if you have one in your penny jar at home it could be worth as much as £20."
