The celebrity engagement rings that cost more than your house

The average cost of a celebrity engagement ring hit £1 million for the first time in 2016. A study by 77 Diamonds found some interesting trends in celebrity engagements. Apparently those getting engaged for the second time spent six times more than first-timers. Equally bizarrely, those who are still together spent just over half the amount as those who have subsequently split.

Some celebrities have taken engagement bling to another level - and we reveal some of the most jaw dropping rings sported by the stars.

Mariah Carey
She has a history of pricey engagement rings - including a £2 million cracker from Nick Canon. However, her most impressive one was definitely her most recent one. She may never have reached the stage of actually marrying James Packer, but is said to have decided to keep the £8 million ring for sentimental reasons.

Elizabeth Taylor
Mariah's ring knocked Elizabeth Taylor off the top spot of most incredible celebrity engagement rings. Not only did she have quite a collection of them but she also had one of the most astonishing: a £7 million ring given to her by Richard Burton.

Beyonce
The most fabulous couple in music were always bound to exchange impressive bling. Jay Z gave her an octagon-cut engagement ring from Lorraine Schwarz in 2007. It has been valued at a jaw-dropping £4 million.

Paris Hilton
In 2004, Paris received an incredible 24-carat diamond engagement ring from her fiancé Paris Latsis - said to be worth about £3.6 million. The engagement was cancelled (four months later), and Paris put the ring into an auction to raise money for the victims of Hurricane Katrina. It was said to have sold for around half its original price.

Kim Kardashian West
Kim was no stranger to marriage when she met Kanye West - as their wedding was her third. However, this didn't put Kanye off buy her an extraordinary 15 carat diamond ring, estimated to be worth £1.1 million. H subsequently gave her a second similar ring so she could have one for each hand.

Jennifer Aniston
The 'Friends' Actress got engaged to Justin Theroux in 2012, and married him in 2015. The oval diamond he gave her has been estimated at an impressive £800,000.

Kate Middleton
One of the most famous engagement rings of all is worth a fraction of these celebrity rings - although still far more than the average house. The 12 carat sapphire, surrounded with diamonds, given by Prince Charles to Lady Diana, and then subsequently by Prince William to Kate Middleton, is currently thought to be worth more than £300,000.
