The historic 16th century villa is in a town near Milan called Carate Brianza, and is practically palatial. You drive up a tree-lined avenue, through the enormous gates, and into the beautiful parkland surrounding the house.

The property itself extends over 3,500 metres, and features all the sumptuous period detail you would expect - including ornate plasterwork, tiled floors - and even a private chapel.

The scale of the property is its most impressive feature. The rooms are so large that the furniture seems lost in it, and the bedrooms are positively cavernous. This home doesn't come with any of the super-prime property must-haves. There's no cinema room or leisure complex. There's no gym or bifold doors.

However, there's so much space that whoever buys it, will be able to install every fancy trapping their heart desires - assuming they have enough cash left over after forking out £120 million for the property itself.

How does it compare?
This isn't the most valuable property ever built. That title belongs to the Antilia Building in Mumbai - a skyscraper built for a single family, which has been valued at £650 million.

It's not the most expensive European villa ever sold either. That title goes to Villa Leopolda on the French Riviera, which has been valued at £578 million. In fact this villa falls just outside the list of the ten most expensive homes in the world - just after The Playboy Mansion.

But what do you think? Is it worth £120 million? Let us know in the comments.
