Seven bungalows that aren't what you might expect

Stylish living on one floor

The sleek Shipdham bungalow

There are lots of reasons for buying a bungalow: mobility problems, easier maintenance - maybe even just not having to vacuum stairs any more.

While they're generally associated with older people, they can make it easier to keep an eye on young children. They also tend to come with larger than average plots, making them ideal for the keen gardener.

Unfortunately, it has to be said that bungalows aren't always particularly beautiful, with unimaginative exteriors and dated decor - but this doesn't have to be the case.

We look at seven single-storey homes with all the style anyone could want.

Hampstead, London NW3

The bungalow surrounded by mansions

Most of the homes in swanky Templewood Avenue are mansions - so this modestly-sized three-bedroom bungalow is a bit of a surprise. Indeed, the agents suggest that it could be pulled down, and something much larger built. There's certainly room in the 90-foot garden. Doing that would be a real shame, though, as it's a charming home as it is, with three bedrooms, a reasonably-sized kitchen and an enormous, sunny living room. It costs £3,950,000 through agent TK International.

Seven houses with fabulous kitchens

Shipdham, Norfolk

The living space of the stylish Shipdham bungalow

A world apart from your usual bungalow, this stunning low-rise modern building has a curved roof and Siberian larch cladding. Inside, all is clean and modern, with sleek slate floors and a huge open-plan living space. Floor-to-ceiling windows make the most of the view. There are two bedrooms and two bathrooms, as well as a walk-in cupboard to hide all the clutter. It's up for sale for £350,000 through agent William H Brown.

Robertsbridge, East Sussex

The stone-floored kitchen

Even in the home counties, bungalows don't usually cost the best part of a million - but this one's that pricey for a reason. The brick-built barn conversion has five bedrooms and loads of reception space, as well as stabling, menage and ten acres of land. There's a lovely stone-floored kitchen, and a great balance between simple modernity and period features. It costs £950,000 through agent John D Wood & Co.

Retirement housing crisis: the UK's hotspots

Earsdon, Tyne and Wear

The newly-converted barn

This brand-new three-bedroom former barn is a rather different proposition from the one above, as one of six new barn conversions in what's described as 'an extraordinary boutique development designed for contemporary living with a rural twist'. Built around a large open-plan kitchen/diner, it features spa style bathrooms, a bespoke designed contemporary kitchen, underfloor heating and high quality appliances. Agents Propology Boutique Properties are asking £585,000.

Chipping Campden, Gloucestershire

The stone bungalow in Chipping Camden

A Cotswold stone cottage on the edge of an idyllic town, with the river Cam running alongside - and all on the ground floor. This pretty home has three bedrooms and two bathrooms, with two receptions and a good-sized kitchen, and has a real country feel. It's on the market for £565,000 through agents Mark Annett & Company.

Wimbledon, London SW19

The interior of the stylish Hampstead bungalow

In a private gated mews with just one other home, this stylish single-storey home is just minutes from Wimbledon Village High Street. The three bedrooms and three bathrooms are separated from the enormous open-plan living area by a decked internal courtyard; bi-fold doors give an inside/outside feel. You'll need to rustle up £2,150,000; it's on the market with Hawes & Co.

Liversedge, West Yorkshire

The 1960s Liversedge bungalow

There's a real retro style to this 1960s bungalow, built in a rather Brutalist style that's softened by the natural stone. It has a large open plan living area, as well as a games room, along with three bedrooms and three baths. There's also a very authentic pine sauna. The house has been recently refurbished, with stylish details such as a timber wall and designer kitchen. It costs £449,950 from agent Yorkshire's Finest.
