A man armed with only a bagful of dreams and a toy banana has stumbled upon a box of extraordinary history.

The 35-year-old, who's remaining anonymous, has been undertaking some home remodelling over the last few months.

Down in the basement, he moved a wall and knocked down a low-hung ceiling – and it's there where he made an incredible discovery .

"So my family and I have been living in our house we bought some years back," he explains.

"The house was built in the late 40s. I had remodeled everything on the first and second floors when it came time to remodel the basement.

"The man, known only as Branik12 , describes in an Imgur gallery how he "peeled back the basement walls" to find "random writing and drawings".

Some of the scribblings appear to be Swastikas. Others are ineligible.

Brenik12 says in his tale that he called his wife and they looked through the contents. They used a small toy banana – which they apparently took quite some time to find – for scale.

Random, but welcome. Size matters. Inside the green suitcase, hidden under creased wax paper and historic, crumpled newspaper clippings, were three great wads of dosh.

The first bundle contained 20s, the second, 50s, the third, 100 dollar bills. It's a big haul, allegedly weighing in at about $23,000.

Not a bad find."The newspaper is dated March 25, 1951," says Brenik12 .

"This must be near the time the box was hidden.

"Some of the bills were rarer than others. Some brown notes, a gold certificate and some star notes nearly uncirculated."

It's a captivating discovery - something everyone dreams of finding in their home, but few do. We're not sure where the cash came from exactly, but their rarity and age must tell a remarkable story.

Brenik12 adds that he's going to use the money to pay off some of his mortgage, and contacted a lawyer for advice as to how to proceed.
