Ticketholders could strike gold as Lotto fetes Team GB Olympic success

Team GB's success will see the creation of 27 UK millionaires as the Lotto celebrates the athletes' haul of gold medals.

There will be a total of 67 life-changing prizes on offer during Saturday night's draw - one for every Olympic medal won by Team GB in Rio.

As well as the 27 £1 million prizes on offer, there will be 23 extra prizes of £100,000 to equal the silver medal haul and 17 additional prizes of £50,000 to match the bronze medals won.

Arabella Gilchrist, head of brand for the National Lottery, said: "Team GB's triumph in Rio is a fantastic example of what National Lottery funding has done for our country.

"If you've ever bought a National Lottery ticket then you made this happen and should be really proud.

"We want to thank all of our players and celebrate this weekend by making an additional 67 winners, including 27 extra millionaires."

British athletes have won 700 Olympic and Paralympic medals since National Lottery funding was first awarded to elite athletes in 1997.

Team GB won 67 medals - 27 golds - and finished second in the table behind the US.

Many stars of London 2012 successfully defended their crowns four years on, including Mo Farah on the track, Nicola Adams in the boxing ring and Jade Jones on the taekwondo mats.

Just over 35% of British athletes who went to the Games returned with a medal - including every single track cycling member.
