Over half of consumers who haggle over their home insurance save money on their premium, according to a study.
A survey of 2,000 members of the public by consumer group Which? found that half did not try to change their existing deal.
Just over a third switched to another home insurer, with over half of those saving an average of £82 on their premium.
Which? Money editor Harry Rose said: "Homeowners could be saving over £80 a year by challenging their existing home insurance provider or shopping around for a better deal elsewhere.
"The recent announcement that insurers must show last year's premium on renewal letters should also serve as a useful prompt to people that they could be saving money."
Which? said the cost of home insurance can be cut by paying an annual amount rather than instalments and by shopping around for quotes.
