When you hear that Ringo Star's drum kit sold for a staggering £1.4 million then you might think a guitar played by 'The King' would go for well into the millions, but apparently not.

A 1969 Custom Gibson Ebony Dove guitar played by Elvis Presley was auctioned off at the late singer's home in Graceland, Memphis.

Elvis played the piece of Rock and Roll memorabilia at dozens of concerts from 1971 to 1975, and in the documentary "Elvis on Tour".

The guitar had been expected to fetch more than $300,000 but ended up in the buyers hands for just $270,000 (£185,000).

The auction included an original tape recording of Elvis performing, and other jewellery. The iconic singer was born on this day (8 January) in 1935 and died just 42 years later in 1977.

According to the Mirror the guitar was previously owned by Mike Harris who was lucky enough to be given the guitar by Elvis himself at a concert in 1975.

Harris said Presley walked to the front of the stage and handed him the instrument, adding: "He struck a couple of licks on it, and then he just came to the edge of the stage and held it out by the neck.

"He said 'this is yours. Hold on to that. Hopefully it'll be valuable one day'."

So, how much would you pay for a piece of music history? A guitar played by one of the biggest music stars of all time may seem like a good investment but there are far more bizarre celebrity items that are auctioned off each year.

Some of the craziest celebrity auction items include a mason jar filled with the 'air molecules' from the film premiere of Mr and Mrs Smith with Brad Pitt and Angeline Jolie, Justin Timberlake's unfinished breakfast and even a piece of Britney Spears' used chewing gum.

Die-hard Elvis fans can celebrate the life of the star at the annual Parkes Elvis Festival in New South Wales, Australia.

The event, which started in 1993, celebrates the life of the great artist and the number of visitors has grown significantly each year.
