The Fixer: flood insurance fail

Updated

Have you been left out of pocket due to poor service or sharp practice? Do you have a money problem that won't go away?

It can seem impossible to get a fair result when you are battling a financial issue alone. But never fear! The AOL Money Fixer is here to help.

Dear Fixer,
When there was an underground leak at my mother's house in May, I called her insurer Saga immediately. But that was more than a month ago and nothing has been done.

The work has been held up for several reasons, including that the loss adjuster who went round to look at the damage initially did nothing further to advance the case and had to be replaced.

Saga has also sent me a letter saying that I actually have to deal with Legal & General, which underwrites the policy, as it only advertises and sells home insurance.

My mother is nearly 91 years old and has been very distressed about all the problems with the claim, but so far we have only been offered compensation of £150. Can you help us to resolve this nightmare situation?

C Drinkwater, Bromley

Dear Ms Drinkwater,

Saga apologises for the delay in dealing with your mother's claim, and admits that there was a problem with the first loss adjuster sent to the house.

The work has now been finished to your specifications and the cash settlement offered by Legal & General has been increased to £5,315.

This amount includes compensation for the telephone calls you have made, the electricity used at the property and the displacement costs incurred by your mother.
