How to stay in a celebrity home
If you can't afford to buy a celebrity pad - or even to take out a rental - how about staying for just a night or two?
AirBnB, which allows home owners to rent out part or all of their property, has plenty of homes on its books which were once owned by stars.
Stay at one Malibu property, indeed, and you can kill several birds with one stone. The three-bedroom house, which sleeps eight adults, is the former home of home of Denzel Washington, Jimmy Page and Jan Michael Vincent, as well as singers Captain and Tenille.
The current owners bought the house in 1994.
"That's when we bought this wonderful property. We remodelled it in a style of 'South of France (where I'm from) meets grand old Malibu' and lived 13 happy years in it," they say.
"In 2007 we acquired another property and made this special house available for rental, year round. More than 200 guests have stayed at this property, including many celebrities, and we have had only positive reviews."
The house is perched on top of a small bluff, and has 180-degree sea views - and 180-degree views of the mountains. From the patio, it's possible to see dolphins and migrating whales. There are two small houses and a detached gym set in the eight acres.
The house costs from $490 to $798 a night, plus a cleaning fee.
Rather cheaper - from just $170 a night - is a 1930s cottage on the Hawaiian island of Maui that guitarist Jimi Hendrix stayed in while filming Rainbow Bridge. The Gingerbread Cottage is pretty tiny - a studio with one queen-sized bed and a day bed - but is set in four and a half lush acres.
And if you fancy something closer to home - and a bit more literary - author Charles Dickens' former home is available for £175 a night. "Staying in places with historical significance leads to a richer experience and is something not easy to find, especially in central London," say the owners.
