An electric guitar signed by the members of Grateful Dead was auctioned for $526,000 (£340,265) on Sunday.

The rock band put the guitar up for auction during the band's epic "Fare Thee Well" concert in Chicago.

The commemorative six-string guitar was played onstage by Bob Weir during the band's June 28th show in Santa Clara, California.

It was sold by D'Angelico Guitars and HeadCount, a non-profit organisation that "works with musicians to promote participation in democracy".

Grateful Dead members, Bob Weir, Phil Lesh, Mickey Hart and Bill Kreutzmann, had all signed the guitar and the band's skull logo had been printed on the back. The instrument also featured the words 'fare thee well'.

Guest performers, Trey Anastasio, Bruce Hornsby and Jeff Chimenti who had joined the band for their Chicago goodbye shows, also left their names on the guitar.

The band, who were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1994, have sold over 35 million albums worldwide and have been playing together in various formations since 1965.

The final five shows played by the group this year were entitled: "Fare Thee Well: Celebrating 50 Years of the Grateful Dead" and the band have announced that the Chicago concert was their last as a group.
