A New York restaurant is selling the world's priciest sandwich, which costs an eye-watering $214 (£140).

For that price you might think it'd also be the world's biggest sarnie, or at least come filled with Wagyu beef. But no, it's just a cheese toastie.

Granted, it's not your everyday variety: the bread is made with Dom Pérignon, while the butter is infused with white truffle. That is topped with Caciocavallo Podolico cheese and, once toasted, it's dusted with 23ct gold leaf shavings. Obviously.

You can see how it's made in the video above.

"Comfort food"

The Quintessential Grilled Cheese is sold at Serendipity 3, a restaurant popular with celebrities and other types with money to burn.

Chef Joe Calderone describes his 'grilled cheese' as "the ultimate experience in dining".

He adds: "We decided on grilled cheese as it's the ultimate in comfort food. What better way to celebrate that sandwich than to make the quintessential version of it?

"We chose ingredients by looking for the finest and rarest in the world to create the ultimate experience in dining."

We think one passer by, upon being given a sample of the Quintessential, summed it up quite nicely:

"It's the best cheese sandwich I've ever eaten, " she says. "Maybe not worth $214, though."
