Sony 'pulls Adele from SoundCloud'

Adele is among the artists Sony Music has reportedly withdrawn from SoundCloud in a financial dispute.

The label has pulled some of its major artists - including Hozier, Kelly Clarkson and Miguel - from the streaming site, accusing it of not providing enough options to make money from the music it hosts on the platform.

SoundCloud said in a statement to Billboard: "We are in ongoing conversations with major and independent labels and will continue to add partners to the programme.

"We've always put control in the hands of creators, and anyone who makes music and audio can decide when and how they want to share it with fans, allowing artists to essentially broadcast out to the world the availability of new content."

It is thought Sony may not be satisfied with the amount of revenue SoundCloud raises from advertising.

The streaming site's adverts include infrequent audio spots and small pop-ups before tracks play, which could limit how much money it generates and is able to share with labels.

SoundCloud said it has already paid out more than two million US dollars (£1.3 million) to partners through On SoundCloud, a financial programme launched last August.

So far just over half a dozen artists - including Passion Pit, Leon Bridges and MS MR - are thought to have had their music removed from the service, with more expected to follow.

Sony Music declined to comment.
