Toyota is recalling 1.75 million cars worldwide, warning of possible problems with fuel system components and faulty brake installations.

The company - which has a history of recalls - is warning Lexus drivers that 759,000 vehicles around the world have a faulty fuel delivery pipe system. This, it says, could cause a leak and, potentially, a fire. The recall includes 9,637 British-registered cars.

The models affected are the IS 250, IS 250 C, IS F, GS 300, GS 460, GS 450h, LS 600h, LS 600hL and LS 460, built between January 2005 and September 2010. The CT200h isn't affected.

The brake problem, which doesn't affect any British cars, relates to some models of Toyota's Crown Majesta, as well as Noah and Voxy models produced between June 2007 and 2012 - around 802,000 vehicles in all. The company told the BBC it wasn't aware of any crashes, injuries or deaths caused by the faulty brake system, which could crack and lead to brake fluid leaking.

A third recall, over faulty fuel suction plates, affects only vehicles in Japan: around 190,000 Corolla Rumion and Auris models built between October 2006 and October 2014.

Toyota has a less-than-perfect history when it comes to recalls. In late 2009 and 2010 it recalled around nine million vehicles after drivers reported that their vehicles were accelerating unexpectedly. But it was widely criticised for taking too long about owning up to the problem, leading to the payment of a $1.2 billion settlement to the US Justice Department and fines of nearly $50 million.

The company admitted that it "misled US consumers by concealing and making deceptive statements about two safety issues affecting its vehicles, each of which caused a type of unintended acceleration."

As a result, Toyota has since tried to be quicker off the mark over safety problems. Six months ago, it recalled 6.39 million vehicles worldwide in its second-largest recall announcement ever. In June, it recalled another 2.3 million vehicles for faulty airbag inflators.

Owners of models affected by this latest recall will be contacted by the company, and told to take the car to their nearest dealer for a check, which should take three or four hours. They can also type in their registration number here to see whether their vehicle is affected.
