Rival low-fare airlines easyJet and Ryanair have both announced increased passenger numbers for July 2014.

EasyJet carried 6.43 million passengers last month - a 7.7% rise on the total for July 2013.

Ryanair enjoyed a 4% rise in July 2014, with 9.15 million people flying with the Irish carrier.

The latest figures took the number of passengers travelling with easyJet in the 12 months ending July 2014 to 63.82 million - a 5.9% increase on the 12 months ending July 2013.

Ryanair carried 83.0 million passengers in the 12 months ending July 2014 - a 4% rise on the figure for the 12 months ending July 2013.
